Marron, Lord of Horses
The lord of horses, known to its peoples as the Spur of the Plains, is represented by a horseshoe symbol. Speed, stamina, and loyalty of beasts are his greatest gifts. Worshippers are riders, nomads, and messengers. A folk rite is to nail a horseshoe above the door of a stable. He courts Keryn, Lady of Blossoms, in spring races, and the festivals are often tied in pairs. Orven, Lord of Paths, is envied for the paths that belong to travelers, not steeds. Marron once lent his steeds to Neryth, Lady of Fortune, gamblers, but she allowed them to race to their deaths in rigged contests.
Holy Day
The Long Run is a ritual race through or around a city. No two cities are the same, and the course is laid out to avoid duplicating roads and to take at least six hours. Horses of various kinds come with them, but there are also draft and messenger animals, like snow dogs in the far north or oxen in areas without many horses. There is no prize for first place; the animals should not be beaten to win, but honored and given as many breaks as they need. The animals are always watered first before the rider.
